A bit of History :: Lamington National Park and O'Reilly's
The Lamington region had been inhabited by Aboriginal people of the Yugambeh language for thousands of years. The family tribes that lived closest to Lamington National Park are the Birinburra, Kombumerri, Wangerriburra and Migunberri people.
In 1912, eight selections of land (100 acres each) on the Lamington Plateau were purchased and occupied by members of the O'Reilly Family.
In 1915, the National Park was declared, and the O"Reillys were effectively surrounded by it. The O'Reilly's worked hard to maintain their rights to own their land and persuade the government not to resume their selections into the National Park.
In 1926 the O'Reilly's Guest House opened for business.
In 1937; a stinson airliner dissappears on a routine flight from Brisbane to Sydney. Which started one of the most remarkable rescue stories in Australia's history,
Today, the road to O'Reillys from Canungra is bitumen, just a pleasant drive through the country ..
